Highlights of Vientiane

Vientiane is home to That Luang Stupa, the golden sacred monument and national symbol of Laos, and Wat Sisaket, the city’s oldest temple, famed for its thousands of Buddha images. Wat Ong Teu Mahavihan houses the largest monastery in the city with a serene Buddha statue, while Wat Si Muang is a popular temple associated with local legends and spiritual protection. The Patuxay Victory Monument stands as an iconic war memorial inspired by the Arc de Triomphe, and the Lao National Museum showcases the country’s history, art, and culture. Just outside the city, Buddha Park (Wat Xieng Khouan) delights visitors with hundreds of Buddhist and Hindu sculptures.

Talat Sao (Morning Market) and upscale galleries are great options to shop vibrant textiles, handicrafts, and local goods.  Lao cuisine is best experienced in the city’s restaurants, with dishes like tam mak-hung, laap, and ping kai, complemented by Beer Lao or fresh fruit shakes. Cultural festivities such as Boun Pha That Luang fair in November and Boun Ok Phansa, the last day of Buddhist Lent, when locals set afloat candlelit banana leaf boats (heua fai) on the Mekong River, creating a magical spectacle, enrich the city.
